We Monsters

We Monsters Title Page

Who doesn’t love the way one book leads to another?

While I work through my inability to book bind, I thought I would put up some books grouped by theme.  Some of my book shelves are organized by theme and I like thinking about books this way.

We Monsters

There are six books in this theme and I’ll do a collage page for each one. I’ll post them as quickly as I can crank them out.

Pickle-Chiffon PieAs my first choice should make obvious, I’m using monster in an Edward Scissorhands kind of way. Pickle Chiffon Pie is one of my favorite children’s books and is resplendent with monsters.

The King told the three princes this: “You will each go into the huge forest at the edge of the kingdom for three days. As you know, it is full of Gazoos, fairies, Dimdoozles–all sorts of unusual things.

“The one who brings back the most unusual, the most marvelous, the MOST WONDERFUL THING–may marry the Princess.”

Prince Bernard… “wasn’t very strong or very handsome or very smart; but the Princess liked him best of all.”

He doesn’t bring anything back except the story of his compassion because he can’t bear to exploit the wonders of the kingdom (including a Three-nosed Snozzle he finds busy making the King’s favorite dish: Pickle Chiffon pie). Of course his story is recognized as “THE MOST WONDERFUL THING OF ALL.”

    Great book.

    Great book.

Nice to see the page up! Comics, monsters and cities. I am loving SPIRIT (graphic novel and visually stunning so-so film). Also FRAY. Penning my own way to monstrous explorations.

The city/monster thing is very interesting. All that city anxiety like contagion or the fear of contagion makes the monster more … menacing. Years since I read it but in Frankenstein doesn’t the creature spend most of his time mooning around the countryside? The modern gothic doesn’t take place in the ruins any more unless settings of Armageddon/end times/plague (which I love) could be ruins…
I’m finally reading The Road and I just saw District 9 last week so humanity as a collective seems the true monster.

Does anybody know how many legs the Dimdoozle had?
    Thanks,

My guess is: no legs–just wheels
